Almost every homeowner with a black thumb wants to know: What’s the trick to enjoying plants without killing them? ;p

I was walking around 3rd Street Promenade when I saw someone selling pretty terrariums in glasses of different sizes and shapes. It was a bit pricey.

My bf's mom's birthday was coming up and I wanted to give her something I made so that gave me an idea-- since I love doing DIY projects- I researched more on how to make one.

I went to flower district in downtown los angeles and saw this shop that sells different sizes of succulents called 'Costar Orchids and Tropical' 739 S San Pedro St. Los Angeles. (its a dodgy area but worth the trip!)

It was like a candy store for succulents. I was so excited and wanted to buy everything.

The prices are $1 for the smallest $2.50 for medium and $6 for large.

You will need the ff:

1. Clear vessel with wide mouth (they sell it at this store, but you can also go to any craft stores, or even go to thrift shops. Be creative and you can use different things to put your succulent and make a little garden)

2.  Pea gravel

3. Cactus and succulent soil mix

4. Succulents (Once you have obtain your vessel/ container you will be able to choose your succulents, match the colors etc)

5. Moss

6. Decorative gravel and rock (found at pet, craft or landscaping stores)

I got this little box to start my 1st project :)

So it's all about layering...

1st Layer are stones/ gravel (this will help drain water, when you water it)

2nd Layer will be the soil (try mixing it, my friend told me she microwaves the soil for 10 seconds just to kill the bacteria)

3rd will be arranging the succulents and mixing it with the soil, setting it in.

4th will be sand or moss or you can do both. (Its always nice to see in a glass different layers and textures.

5th Adding decorative shells, little branches colored stones etc.

BE CREATIVE! :)

So I ended up making this for my bf's mom on her birthday

And made this for our place :)

And I made this for my friend who celebrated his birthday recently (at this point I was becoming better at making it, I used colored glass and it looked great)

Its a fun activity to do, it was therapeutic! You can do it with your friends as an acitivity and it's a great gift to give because you made it. Also nobody can kill a succulent. Water them twice a month and they will live!
